Stories of Hope: The Network/La Red

Sheila's Story* from The Network/La Red.

Sheila, a 50 year-old transgender woman of color was experiencing harassment and stalking from her abusive ex-partner. Sheila, a lesbian, who had been with her partner for 7 years, was in the relationship for 4 years before she started transitioning.

She called The Network/La Red seeking support around filing for a restraining order.  During our initial conversations Sheila disclosed experiencing physical, emotional, sexual and identity abuse as well as harassment and stalking after breaking off the relationship.

She shared that “My partner had always been a bit jealous and controlling, but that got worse as I started to transition.” Sheila left her partner  after a fight in which her partner had strangled her.

TNLR  helped Sheila connect to a LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) Domestic Violence attorney who would help her with the restraining order process.

At the hearing, Sheila was denied the restraining order. The judge told her that she was too big to be afraid of anyone. Sheila has not been able to get an appeal approved and continues to experience harassment and stalking from her ex-partner.

TAKE A STAND AGAINST SEXUAL AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AT FENWAY 2011

Angela Menino Verizon Wireless and JDI at Fenway ParkSeptember 15, 2011:  JDI teamed up with the Red Sox, Verizon Wireless and Verizon Communications to raise awareness and help support sexual and domestic violence organizations in Fenway Park.

A pre-game ceremony included a check presentation to JDI from Verizon and a special recognition of First Lady Angela F. Menino for her long-time advocacy to help end sexual and domestic violence.

Mrs. Menino is always there, providing her quiet yet strong leadership, to get people to pay attention and be part of the solution.  Mrs. Menino, along with the Mayor, has been a vocal advocate to raise awareness of the issues and to raise much needed support for more services.  JDI was proud to help honor Angela for the many phone calls she’s answered and the many times she’s connected a survivor to life-saving services through the network of JDI members; for her advocacy, for her commitment and for cell phone collection volunteers at fenway sept 15 2011simply being Angela: a leader for the safety, liberty and dignity of survivors and an inspiration to us all.

Volunteers also collected old cell phones for HopeLine from Verizon Wireless. These phones will either be refurbished and distributed to help victims of domestic violence or recycled and turned into cash grants to domestic violence agencies.  It's not too late to help!   Organize a phone drive at your workplace, in your congregation or at your school.
