The Network/ La Red Cell Phone Drive – October 1st – 31st, 2005

Got old cell phones? Don’t toss them… Donate them to The Network/La Red cell phone drive! The Network/La Red is kicking off the third year of it’s cell phone drive in the month of October, which coincides with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Cell phones can be in any condition and only the handset and battery are needed. The Network/La Red uses the cell phone drive to both raise significant funds to support it’s programs and to provide emergency phones for survivors. All donated phones are either recycled through the reuse/recycle program of Shelter Alliance or refurbished as an emergency phone for survivors through the Verizon Helpline program.

Employers Against Domestic Violence (“EADV”) is a non-profit membership organization uniting Massachusetts’s employers with experts in the field of domestic and workplace violence prevention. Committed to pro-actively addressing the causes and effects of violence in the workplace, EADV identifies and recommends national and local best practices in the areas of public policy, prevention, intervention and training in order to help employers address the effects of violence on the workplace. EADV promotes more productive workplaces that remain intolerant of all forms of violence by supporting comprehensive and safe interventions for those affected by violence.

Clothesline Project - October 6-7th, 2005

A visual display of shirts with messages and illustrations that have been designed by survivors of violence or by someone who knows a woman who has been killed due to violence. The purpose of this project is to increase awareness of the impact of violence against women, to celebrate woman’s strength to survive and to provide another avenue for her to courageously break the silence that often surrounds her experience.

The shirts are color coded to show the form of abuse and whether the victim survived the abuse they experience.

White represents women who died because of violence;

Yellow or beige represents battered or assaulted women;

Red, pink, and orange are for survivors of rape and sexual abuse;

Blue and green represent survivors of incest and sexual abuse;

Purple or lavender represents women attacked because of their sexual orientation;

Black is for women attacked for political reasons.

State House Domestic Violence Awareness Week – October 17-21, 2005

A series of events sponsored by Governor Mitt Romney, Lt. Governor Kerry Healey, Senate President Robert Travaglini, Senator Edward Augustus, Senator Pamela Resor, Representative Kay Khan, The Governor’s Commission on Sexual and Domestic Violence and The Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators will take place in the State House designed to raise awareness about domestic violence and its consequences. Events are free and open to the public.

Proclamation, Press Conference, and Performance - October 17, 2005

Monday we will kick off a series of events designed to raise awareness about domestic violence and its consequences. First, we will hold a press conference during which a legislative resolution will be presented to recognize the many advocates in Massachusetts working on behalf of victims of domestic violence. The press conference will be followed by a play performed by Ben Atherton-Zelman, a nationally renowned playwright. The one man play “Voices of Men” is a 36 minute, multi-media play that deals with sexual assault, dating & domestic violence, and sexual harassment & objectification.

YWCA's 13th annual Daybreak Breakfast – October 17, 2005

Global Warning: Domestic Violence Bridging Cultural Divides is the theme for this annual event to kick-off the YWCA's Week Without Violence. This year's keynote speaker, Carol Goodman Kaufman, author of Sins of Omission: The Jewish Community's Reaction to Domesstic Violence, will speak on the topic of "Bridging Cultural Divides." Kaufman's book examines domestic violence in the Jewish Community and how it is being addressed through extensive interviews with women, rabbis and lay leaders in the Boston area. In a review of the book, Publishers Weekly noted, "...the case studies humanize the problem, and this work brings into the open this sadly neglected issue within the Jewish community." Battered Women and Child Custody Cases - October 20, 2005

Come hear an overview of “Battered Mothers Speak Out,” a human rights research report that examines what happens to battered women when they pursue child custody cases in the Massachusetts family courts. Report Co-Author Monica Driggers will present a brief video on the Human Rights Tribunal, the testimonies of battered women who have gone through difficult custody and visitation battles in the family courts. The video will be followed by an overview of the report and its recommendations.

Following the talk, attendees will be able to view “Breaking the Silence: Children’s Stories,” a powerful new PBS documentary that chronicles the impact of domestic violence on children and the recurring failings of family courts across the country to protect them from their abusers. Questions to follow.

White Ribbon Campaign - October 20, 2005

The White Ribbon Campaign is a campaign were men take a pledge not to commit, condones, or remain silent against violence against women. All men that participate will receive and wear a white ribbon. The goal of the campaign is to get men involved in working to end men’s violence against women, to raise awareness of this problem in the community, and to support organizations that deal with the consequences of men’s violence against women.

Paint the Town La Red: A Celebration of Survival Gala Fundraiser for The Network/ La Red – October 22 2005

The Network/ La Red is an organization dedicated to ending abuse in lesbian, bisexual women’s and transgender communities. The event will feature performances by Kate Bornstein, an author and performance artist whose published works include Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the Rest of Us and My Gender Workbook, and Carmelita Tropicana, a Cuban born writer/actress who won the 1999 OBIE Award for Sustained Excellence in Performance. The evening will be hosted by Rev. Irene Monroe, a religion columnist (“The Queer Thang”), public theologian, and motivational speaker. Honorary Co-Chairs for this event are Massachusetts State Representative Liz Malia and Lambda Literary Award Winning Author Dorothy Allison.

The evening will begin with a cash bar cocktail hour and silent auction followed by an elegant dinner, entertainment, and dancing with DJ Mocha D. Creative black tie attire. ASL and wheelchair accessible.

Lifetime Television Series: “Human Trafficking” - October 24 and October 25

Tune-in to Lifetime Television to watch Lifetime’s two-part original miniseries, “Human Trafficking,” starring Mira Sorvino, Donald Sutherland and Robert Carlyle. Awareness into Action: College Men Uniting in Action to End Campus Sexual Violence. - October 29, 2005

The purpose of this organizing event is to connect men who know that rape and sexual abuse, date rape and sexual harassment must stop and who also understand that there is something that every man can do to help. This event will educate, motivate, and celebrate male efforts to help end sexual assault as we look toward forming campus based male action teams for April 2006, National Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
