Learning about the Exprience of Russian-speaking Women - SAGE Boston
SAGE-Boston invites you to attend a special educational opportunity
regarding the experience of Russian-speaking women with guest speakers:
There are approximately 60,000-70,000 Russian-Americans in Greater Boston;
many are recent immigrants. In addition to the numerous barriers faced
by non-immigrant victims of abuse, Russian-speaking victims of domestic
violence face further language, cultural, and communal barriers. Strong
negative female
gender stereotypes and the overall context of tolerance toward violence
against women in the Former Soviet Union provide a fertile ground for
extensive domestic violence. In addition, there is a strong bel ief that
it is no one’s business what goes on behind closed doors. There
is little relief available to victims, and perpetrators are rarely held
accountable.
This presentation will address how community dynamics influence Russian-speaking
women's experiences of domestic violence, and will allow for discussion
of how senior care providers can use this awareness to help clients.
