Internship Opportunities

There are many wonderful internship possibilities at Jane Doe Inc.

Our work on behalf of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to provide coordinated community responses requires us to partner with health care providers, the legal community, law enforcement, our elected officials, educators, state agencies, and the corporate community. Depending on need and other organizational constraints, Jane Doe Inc. will accept interns from a number of disciplines.

Although we encourage interested students to inquire about potential internships, at this point we are unable to offer any type of salary or stipend. Depending on your school´s requirements, an internship at Jane Doe Inc. may be used for course credit. People of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Requirements: Ability to travel to our office in Downtown Boston. Undergraduate or graduate student. Good research, writing, and organizational skills. Working knowledge of MS Word, Ms Excel and Access would be helpful. Ability to work independently. Ten hours per week for three-month minimum. Sense of humor optional but definitely helpful.

Fundraising and Public Relations Intern

Responsibilities: The Fundraising & Public Relations Intern will assist the Development/Public Relations Team with a variety of tasks and projects, including:
· Writing material and updating website
· Writing and pitching press releases and public service announcements
· Maintaining press lists, organizing press clips
· Assisting on creative development and implementation of events and/or other special projects and fundraisers, including solicitations, outeach and logistics
· Conducting research and drafting reports.
· Administrative tasks as needed

Education Intern

Responsibilities: To support the coordination of the JDI Training Institute, seminars and annual conference. Training topics include legal, health, economic, cultural diversity, and other issues. Support the Education Manager and Special Projects Coordinator with many tasks relating to the coordination of the Training Institute, seminars and conferences. Tasks include:

-The organization of trainer presentations and materials.
-Training site logistics and coordination. -When possible, assistance with registration at events.

Research Intern

Responsibilities: This internship will involve working with the Research and Evaluation Manager on creating an ongoing system for the development and review of topical fact sheets and develop a system for the creation of Jane Doe Inc. Issue Books. This is a relatively new project at Jane Doe Inc. and the Research Assistant will be responsible, with others’ input, for its inception. Tasks include:

-Create template for JDI issue books.
-Compile fact sheets, articles, etc. for each topical issue book.
-Create drafts of topical fact sheets.
-Research each topical fact sheet and issue book areas.
-Develop packets of information for each issue book.
-Work with Research Manager on developing research agenda from membership.
-Work on plan for developing a centralized data collection system.
-Create system for ongoing review of fact sheets (both within JDI staff and members).

Men's Outrearch Project Intern

Men’s Statewide Outreach Project based in Boston seeks smart, dedicated and energetic interns to help launch exciting educational and organizing campaign.

The Men’s Initiative for Jane Doe Inc. (MIJDI) is a network of men and boys throughout Massachusetts working to focus public attention on men’s role in preventing sexual assault and domestic violence. MIJDI fosters collaboration among men's outreach projects throughout Massachusetts, organizing support from men in their communities for Jane Doe Inc. and its member organizations. Currently staffed by one part-time employee, MIJDI has organized statewide trainings on how to educate and mobilize boys and men around these issues; developed a user-friendly website; served as a resource for local organizations; presented at numerous public events; and created a library of outreach campaign materials.

For the next two years, the Men’s Initiative for Jane Doe Inc. will embark on a community outreach and awareness campaign that furthers the mission of the Men’s Initiative to: 1) promote and support the role of men and boys in ending abuse; 2) reinforce messages of non-violence; 3) build partnerships between male allies with sexual assault and domestic violence organizations.

Interns will be involved in all aspects of the campaign - communications, fundraising and field operations - and will work closely with the Project Coordinator, Development and Public Relations staff and activists throughout Massachusetts. Interns will assist with creative development of collateral materials; recruiting volunteers; arranging for regional meetings; researching other campaigns; developing an Organizer’s Tool Kit; writing materials for multi-media campaign; assisting with maintenance of website; distribute materials; planning campaign events.

Government Affairs Intern

Responsibilities: This internship will involve working with the Director of Government Affairs on various events, research analysis and intergovernmental collaborations. Tasks include:

-Research -- Legislative, policy, legal and issues analysis conducted on project-to-project basis.
-Writing -- Drafting legislative and budget advocacy material: action alerts, flyers and sample lobbying materials.
-Communications -- Attend various working groups and intergovernmental collaborations and documenting meeting minutes.

Domestic Violence Homicide Study

Responsibilities: Participate in ground-breaking grant-funded research on MA domestic violence related homicides. Assist in conducting research, obtaining vital records (may include visits to area district / superior courts and other agencies as needed), compile, track and analyze data, and conduct policy research and analysis. Great opportunity to put your research and organizational skills to work and learn about social and policy issues related to domestic violence, victim services, and the MA court and legal system. Administrative task as needed.

Requirements: Ability to travel to our office in Downtown Boston. Working knowledge of MS Word and MS Excel helpful. Online research abilities, access to Lexis Nexus a plus. Ability to work independently. Eight-ten hours per week for three-month minimum. Sense of humor optional but definitely helpful.

Qualified Applicants: Graduate level students in Sociology, Law, Public Health, Public Policy, and Criminal Justice or other social science research fields.
