History of The Campaign

Jane Doe proudly teamed up with Nextel, Motorola, Federal Express and local Police Departments for statewide Donate A Phone Campaign to assist victims of domestic and sexual violence in April of 2001. In March of 2002, we expanded our efforts and joined in partnership with Verizon Wireless.

Started by the Wireless Foundation, Motorola and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), the Donate a Phone program helps increase the number of wireless phones available to victims in need while also generating additional resources to support the NCADV and other organizations working to combat abuse.  Jane Doe partnered with Nextel Communications to promote the Donate A Phone campaign throughout Massachusetts.

Donate a Phone is part of the CALL to PROTECT program, a national educational and philanthropic program aimed at combating domestic violence.  CALL to PROTECT provides the security and mobility of wireless phones to victims of domestic violence by helping them transition from living in an abusive situation to regaining safety and independence.

With the help of Nextel and more than 30 police departments throughout the state, Jane Doe collected no longer used wireless phones to assist victims of domestic violence across the country.  The wireless phones, which were  refurbished and re-programmed, provided victims with an emergency lifeline by allowing them to call for help instantly with the touch of a button.  The phones will be pre-programmed to call 9-1-1 and the Domestic Violence SafeLink, a statewide hotline operated by a Jane Doe member program -- Casa Myrna Vazquez.  The collection effort ran from February 12 through April 15, 2001 with drop off locations at five Nextel offices and over 30 police stations located across the Commonwealth.

JDI introduced a cell phone drive with Shelter Alliance in December 2004 and continues to collect phones to better support those affected by sexual assault and domestic violence. For more information, please contact Jane Doe Inc. at development@janedoe.org.
