Frequently Asked Questions and AnswersQ. Can I donate my cell phone? Are there drop-offs in other states?A. Currently, there are three options in Massachusetts to donate your unused cell phones: 1. SHELTER ALLIANCE: Shelter Alliance collects used wireless phones and pays Jane Doe Inc. anywhere from $.25 to $25 for every cellular phone sent on our behalf. If you have collected over 15 phones, you can send them directly to Shelter Alliance for recycling. Contact 866-744-1003 or go to www.shelteralliance.net for more details. Please remember to indicate that you are interested in having the monetary donation sent to Jane Doe Inc. If you have less than 15 phones, you can mail them to us at the Jane Doe Inc. office, and we’ll add them in with our next shipment to the Shelter Alliance. The other two options refurbish the phones for use by victims of domestic and sexual violence: 2.HOPELINE: Verizon Wireless accepts donations of used wireless phones at any of their stores in New England. VWZ refurbishes the phones for redistribution to clients in domestic violence programs among other agencies. Phones that cannot be refurbished are sold, and the funds support Verizon Wireless grant program for domestic violence organizations throughout the country. 3. DONATE A PHONE: Jane Doe Inc. worked with Nextel and the Wireless Foundation to conduct a Donate A Phone Campaign in the spring of 2001. The Donate A Phone campaign is an ongoing effort sponsored on the national level by the Wireless Foundation, Motorola and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. To find out more, please check out their web-site at www.wirelessfoundation.org. Phones can be mailed directly to: Call to Protect Q. What kind of phones will be accepted?A. Any wireless phone -- analog or digital—working or not. Please remember to include the battery. Shelter Alliance does not accept other accessories or chargers. The Wireless Foundation and Verizon Wireless will accept chargers, accessories such as headphones, and other items in addition to the phone. Q. Can you help me run a phone drive in my school/workplace/congregation to raise money for Jane Doe Inc.?A. We would be happy to help. For more information please contact donations@janedoe.org. Q. Can I get a tax receipt?A. For donations to Verizon Wireless, The Wireless Foundation, and A Call to Protect, include a written request for a tax receipt and be sure to include your name and address. The Shelter Alliance does not provide tax receipts. Q. Will the phone come back to a program in Massachusetts?A. The collected phones are part of a national effort, so that we and our colleagues around the country always have access to the phones we need. Because this is a national effort and not all donated phones will be functional, we cannot guarantee that your donation will be distributed here in Massachusetts. Q. How does the phone work? Will the person be able to make other calls?A. The phones can only be used to call 9-1-1 and the statewide domestic violence hotline, SafeLink, a program of Jane Doe member organization Casa Myrna Vazquez. Other services as well as incoming calls are not available with these phones. Q. How do I get an emergency 9-1-1 cell phone?A. Jane Doe Inc. does not distribute emergency 9-1-1 cell phones. If you or someone you know is in danger and needs a 911 programmed cell phone, please contact your local domestic violence or sexual assault organization. |
