Stories of Hope: The Network/La Red

Sheila's Story* from The Network/La Red.

Sheila, a 50 year-old transgender woman of color was experiencing harassment and stalking from her abusive ex-partner. Sheila, a lesbian, who had been with her partner for 7 years, was in the relationship for 4 years before she started transitioning.

She called The Network/La Red seeking support around filing for a restraining order.  During our initial conversations Sheila disclosed experiencing physical, emotional, sexual and identity abuse as well as harassment and stalking after breaking off the relationship.

She shared that “My partner had always been a bit jealous and controlling, but that got worse as I started to transition.” Sheila left her partner  after a fight in which her partner had strangled her.

TNLR  helped Sheila connect to a LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) Domestic Violence attorney who would help her with the restraining order process.

At the hearing, Sheila was denied the restraining order. The judge told her that she was too big to be afraid of anyone. Sheila has not been able to get an appeal approved and continues to experience harassment and stalking from her ex-partner.

Red Sox, Jane Doe and Verizon Team Up To Prevent Violence

WHAT:        The Boston Red Sox, Jane Doe Inc., Verizon Wireless and Verizon Communications have teamed up to raise awareness and help support sexual and domestic violence organizations.  Prior to tonight’s game, the Red Sox and Jane Doe Inc. will honor First Lady of Boston Angela F. Menino, a champion in the fight to rid our communities of sexual and domestic violence. During this pre-game ceremony, Verizon will also present Jane Doe Inc. with a donation of $25,000 that will support ways to use technology to strengthen the movement to end sexual and domestic violence.

HopeLine from Verizon Wireless will sponsor a cell phone drive tonight, and donations will be collected at all Fenway Park gates starting two hours before the first pitch at 7:05 pm. through the 2nd inning.  Used cell phones, batteries and accessories are either recycled for distribution to survivors or turned into cash for grants to domestic violence programs throughout New England. Red Sox fans are encouraged to collect old cell phones from friends and coworkers and drop them off at any gate.

WHEN:       Thursday, September 15, 2011.

Ceremony prior to Boston Red Sox v Toronto Blue Jays game at 7:05 pm ET

WHY:           One in three women, one in four girls and one in six boys report being abused at some point in their life. It’s time to STAND UP and be part of the solution in ending sexual and domestic violence.

Jane Doe Inc. is the statewide advocacy and social justice coalition of 60 community-based sexual and domestic violence organizations in Massachusetts. Together with its membership, JDI is making our communities safer today and for future generations.
