What We Do

"Throughout the years being an active member of Jane Doe Inc. has given me the opportunity to participate in many activities to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as the opportunity to improve my professional skills attending trainings and webinars. The tremendous impact we make as part of the Jane Doe coalition is unmeasurable for every agency, advocate, client and community member." ~ Claudia Segura - JDI Coalition Member and Advocate

SEEING PURPLE: Zakim Bridge and State House to be lit on October 1st for Domestic Violence Awareness

Advocates throughout Massachusetts and across the country will make an extra push during October to raise awareness about domestic violence that can help save lives.  While public understanding of domestic violence has improved over the past 30 years, the subject still remains taboo and too uncomfortable for many to discuss and is fraught with misconceptions, leaving victims at risk and offenders unaccountable.
A listing of public events in Massachusetts can be found on the state coalition website at www.janedoe.org.
An activist with H.U.G.S. Sharon, (Help Us Get Safe) has taken the initiative to shed light - purple light - on the subject by arranging for the State House and the Zakim Bridge to be lit on Tuesday October 1st as the awareness kicks off.
Sue Robinson, past President and current Vice President of H.U.G.S. Sharon, explained, "In  view of the statistics in MA that nearly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men in have experienced rape, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner, we wanted to shine a light on domestic violence.  Our hope is that awareness will create understanding and that understanding will create change."
The Commonwealth's Department of Transportation agreed to shine purple on the Zakim Bridge and Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo supported  request for the State House.
"As both a father and a legislator, I am passionate about fighting domestic violence,” said House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo. “Today is a reminder that we must take action. I pledge to do whatever I can to stop these unthinkable crimes and look forward to partnering with Jane Doe Inc. in that effort.”
