A Call to #ReimagineManhood - Massachusetts White Ribbon Day Campaign Launch – March 1, 2018
February 27, 2018
On Thursday, March 1, 2018, advocates, elected officials and supporters will gather to launch the 11th Annual Massachusetts White Ribbon Day Campaign organized by Jane Doe Inc., the statewide coalition against sexual and domestic violence. The timeliness and continued necessity for this prevention campaign is evidenced by the daily reporting of gender-based violence – from sexual harassment in the workplace to rape on college campuses and intimate partner violence in homes throughout the Commonwealth.
The press conference will be held in Nurses’ Hall in the State House with at 10:00 AM. Speaker include: Governor Charlie Baker, Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, Attorney General Maura Healey, Debra Robbin, JDI’s Executive Director, Diana Mancera, JDI’s Director of Membership and Programs, and Paulo Pinto, Executive Director of MAPS (Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers). Pinto is a former co-chair of the WRD Campaign and currently serves on the JDI Board of Directors.
Debra J. Robbin, Executive Director of Jane Doe Inc., said, “This year’s campaign invites men and boys, women and girls, to promote gender equity, racial justice and healthy masculinities. Sexual and domestic violence do not occur in a vacuum and can only be prevented when we address the underlying oppressions that foster an abuse of power.”
Jane Doe Inc. is not holding a central event this year. To foster deeper conversations and engagement, the White Ribbon Day Campaign is focused on community-based events. Local WRD Affiliates will display White Ribbon Day Flags in 100 communities, and electronic billboards operated by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation will appear throughout the month.
