"Until women can live free of the fear of domestic and sexual violence I will continue to raise my voice and partner with JDI. I want to motivate and inspire others to reimagine manhood so that the next generation of young boys and girls expect relationships to be loving, caring, and respectful and that they learn to cope with disappointment, breakup, and disagreement in civil, respectful, nonviolent ways. " ~ Peter Roby - 2014 White Ribbon Day Campaign Co-Chair

RESPOND’s Official Statement on Today’s Domestic Violence Homicide in Malden, Massachusetts

Today’s death of Cecilia Yakubu in Malden is the 19th domestic violence related death since January 1, 2012 and a tragedy that illustrates no one is immune from the public health epidemic of domestic violence.

Jessica Brayden, Executive Director of RESPOND, Inc., which serves Malden and 10 other nearby communities, said, “Domestic violence occurs 24/7 across all socio-economic strata. Until we all accept that domestic violence is a significant public health issue and societal problem that requires the funding and support of life-saving services, victims will continue to be at risk.”

Brayden said, “Domestic violence homicides are predictable and therefore preventable.  Those experiencing domestic abuse are not alone:  Respond’s advocates work hard to ensure that domestic violence survivors, regardless of their gender, orientation, culture or race must not be forced to choose safety over returning to their abuser.  As a community, we must redouble our collective efforts to shatter barriers to services and eliminate the obstacles that prevent victims from finding refuge and support. We must all do our piece — by helping one woman, one man, and one child at a time.  Together, we all can make a difference and save lives.”

RESPOND is a member organization of Jane Doe Inc. (JDI), the statewide advocacy coalition against sexual and domestic violence.  Toni Troop, spokesperson for JDI, noted, "Every homicide begs the question we must all ask: what opportunities there were to provide more support to a victim and to more effectively hold offenders accountable on both an individual and systemic level."

RESPOND’s services are available 24/7.  Call to learn more about warning signs of abuse, risk factors, for help or for support for yourself or someone you know.  The 24/7 hotline number for RESPOND, which serves Malden and other surrounding cities and towns, is 617-623-5900.
