The Story Behind the Public Service Campaign:
Daily headlines of domestic violence, rape, stalking and related murders make clear the prevalence and pervasiveness of these crimes. Between 2003 and 2008, there were 164 people – mostly women – killed in domestic violence homicides in Massachusetts. In June 2008, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick issued a Public Health Advisory on Domestic Violence to address the nearly 300% increase in the number of domestic violence homicides in MA over the three year period, 2005 - 2007. Since January 1, 2009, there have already been thirteen people murdered and two perpetrators who also committed suicide in a domestic violence homicide in MA.
First Lady Diane Patrick offered to be a spokesperson on behalf JDI and to work with us to let people know that domestic violence homicide is predictable, and therefore it is preventable.
Through funds made available by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, JDI created a powerful commercial featuring Mrs. Patrick. The PSA has run on television and radio stations throughout Massachusetts. |

Thanks to support from the Massachusetts Department of Children & Families and corporate support of AMC Entertainment, National Cinemedia and Screenvision, we’re taking this life-saving message to an even broader audience by having it be shown in movie theaters all across the state.
The campaign spot will reach audiences in movie theaters across Massachusetts beginning on May 29.
By spreading a prevention message and providing resources, we can connect victims of domestic violence to the support and services they need to find safety for themselves and their children. We can also help friends, family members and co-workers know where to turn to help someone they care about.
