What's Happening

"Educating our communities and elected officials about the needs of survivors in our local cities and towns requires year round focus. JDI is our pathway to informing and influencing the state and national agenda to end sexual and domestic violence." ~ Karen Cavanaugh, JDI board member and Executive Director of Womanshelter/Companeras, pictured here with a JDI delegation meeting with Congressman Niki Tsongas

House Budget Status

Many thanks to Representatives Hogan and Malia for taking the lead on key amendments -- and to their many colleagues who joined as co-sponsors -- to increase the level of funding above the House Ways and Means (HWM) budget proposal for life-saving and life-changing services for victims and survivors of sexual and domestic violence. And many thanks to JDI members and friends who advocated on behalf of these critical services.

Status of JDI priority line items:

  • DPH 4513-1130: Sexual assault, RISE, GLBT, BIP and Prevention services
    • Governor's Budget: $ 5,518,935
    • House Budget: $ 5,718,990
    • JDI REQUEST:  $ 6,391,677
  • DCF 4800-1400: Support services for people at risk of domestic violence
    •  Governor's Budget: $ 21,607,946
    •  House Budget: $ 21,530,430
    •  JDI REQUEST:  $ 28,079,482
  • DPH 4510-8100: Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) and pedi-SANE
    • Governor's budget: $ 3,165,124
    • House Budget:  $ 3,160,740
    • JDI REQUEST:   $ 3,601,330

Forward progress was made from the original HWM proposal to what was finally voted upon by the full House,  but there is still a long way to go to make up the difference and restore much needed funding for local sexual and domestic violence programs. We will continue to advocate with Senators for the JDI requested amount on all of these line items. Watch here for more updates when the Senate budget is released and for information about what you can do to help!
