What's Happening

"Educating our communities and elected officials about the needs of survivors in our local cities and towns requires year round focus. JDI is our pathway to informing and influencing the state and national agenda to end sexual and domestic violence." ~ Karen Cavanaugh, JDI board member and Executive Director of Womanshelter/Companeras, pictured here with a JDI delegation meeting with Congressman Niki Tsongas

It's time to reathorize VAWA, the Violence Against Women Act.

VAWA is here!

The Violence Against Women Act is due for reauthorization. Our wonderful champions, Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Mike Crapo (R-ID), introduced a bipartisan bill on Wednesday (11/30) to reauthorize and improve VAWA!

The National VAWA Task Force has worked closely with them on the bill to ensure that it will not only continue proven effective programs, but that it will make key changes to streamline VAWA and make sure that even more people have access to safety, stability and justice.  This is an important step forward for VAWA and we hope to get even more improvements as the bill moves forward!

You can help us make sure this continues to be a bipartisan effort.

We are asking you all to call Senator Brown’s office ASAP and ask him to be an original co-sponsor of VAWA: DC office # (202) 224-4543

We expect that Sen. Brown will be supportive given his response to Jane Doe Inc. when we have met with him and his staff as well as his support on similar measures. However, we want him to hear from his constituents -- that means you -- about how important VAWA is to victims and survivors across Massachusetts—and for him to sign on early as an original co-sponsor.

When you call, please make reference to the essential VAWA related funding that has supported your programs (VAWA STOP, GTEA (Arrest), Civil Legal Assistance, SASP, and so on).

If you have any questions, please contact JDI's Policy Director Maureen Gallagher at mgallagher@janedoe.org

Talking points:

  • We know that Senator Brown cares about ending domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.
  • The Violence Against Women Act is critical to our ability to address these crimes in our state.
  • There is evidence showing that VAWA has saved millions of dollars and countless lives.
  • We are asking for you to be an original co-sponsor of the Leahy/Crapo bill that will be introduced on Wednesday.
  • Senator Brown can contact Anya McMurray or Noah Bookbinder at (202)224-7703 to sign on to the bill.
