SUMMARY:Social Media and Our Youth: A Virtual Mental Health Forum
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, May 1st\, the Becca Schmill Foundation will present “Social Media and Our Youth: A VIRTUAL Mental Health Forum\,” at 2:00 pm EDT. Please join us for this free event which includes two consecutive and informative panels featuring nationally recognized and esteemed researchers\, child/adolescent mental health professionals\, teachers\, and youth advocates. Panelists will discuss the significant evidence linking social media use to the skyrocketing increases in rates of clinical level depression\, anxiety\, suicidal ideation\, and eating disorder cases among adolescents\, the impact screen overuse is having on children’s ability to focus\, and what changes are needed to reverse these trends. There will also be an opportunity for Q&A at each session.\n \nThis mental health forum follows on the heels of President Biden’s State of the Union statement\, in which he acknowledged the harms of social media. Furthermore\, in the pre-speech Fact Sheet\, the White House states “..[T]here is mounting evidence that social media is harmful to many kids’ and teens’ mental health\, well-being\, and development. As the Surgeon-General has said\, ‘…[T]hese tools can pit us against each other\, reinforce negative behaviors like bullying and exclusion\, and undermine the safe and supportive environments young people need and deserve.’“\n\nTo learn more about the event and to register for free click here. To learn more about the Becca Schmill Foundation\, please visit www.Beccaschmillfoundation.org

SUMMARY:13th Annual Community of Conscience Brunch
DESCRIPTION:Since 1977\, Casa Myrna has been there to support survivors as they escape domestic violence and recover from the trauma of abuse. With your help\, we’ve grown from a single shelter for women and children fleeing violence into an organization that serves thousands of survivors and their children annually as they rebuild lives free from abuse. \nEvery spring for the last 12 years\, we’ve honored survivors’ strength\, resilience\, and bravery—and the kindness of friends like you. You make it possible for people facing abuse not only to survive but also to thrive. Whether you’re a new supporter this year or an old friend\, you’re a member of Casa Myrna’s community of conscience. Our celebration won’t be complete without you. \nDuring these challenging times\, Casa Myrna continues to provide extraordinary supports and assistance – our programs for domestic violence survivors and their families continue to be needed more than ever before.  And while supports look quite different during a pandemic\, we have found new ways to meet the needs of our community. \nAs was the case in 2021\, we will celebrate the 13th annual Community of Conscience event virtually. This will allow us to reach as many friends as possible. So\, please join us from the comfort of your own home. \nSponsors and attendees will enjoy a program including moving stories from survivors\, along with a number of special guests that help make our work possible. \n  \nWant to become a sponsor? Check out our sponsorship packet\, or reach out to our Volunteer and Events Officer Paola Rosario-Mateo at pmateo@casamyrna.org for more information.

SUMMARY:Survivors' Expressive Arts Journey | DVSN Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Survivors of domestic abuse will share artistic and creative works in response to their experiences.\nThe expressive arts are a profound\, therapeutic outlet for those of us who are processing overwhelming experiences of trauma and abuse.  The arts also provide a deeper\, more powerful experience for all of us who are working to better understand the complexities of this insidious dynamic. An immense and impactful effect of the trauma abuse victims experience is that it confuses our ability to remember and to process what is being done to us in the moment and years after.  Expressive arts offer safe platforms as a bridge to help process our feelings and emotions. Through expressive therapies we can once again connect to the parts of ourselves – the pieces of our essence – that we were forced to lose in order to survive.
