Overview Part 1: The misuse of opioids is a public health crisis that results in a myriad of devastating social and economic outcomes. The impact of and the correlation between substance use and domestic violence/abuse will be discussed, as well as basic brain science and the disease model of addiction. Ways to approach and interact with people living with substance use disorder (SUD) and alternative language to reduce stigma in this population will also be presented.

Overview Part 2: Vicarious trauma, secondary stress, compassion fatigue and burnout – all nuanced forms of stress – can affect those in the “helping professions” by virtue of direct exposure to other’s trauma. Learn to identify types of trauma, symptoms of compassion fatigue, components of the wellness triangle and how you can address negative and challenging changes in yourself that can result from continuous exposure to traumatic events of people whom you help.
